Luxury vinyl flooring: Perfect for any room and any installation

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is so stylish it looks terrific in the living and dining areas and bedroom. It's also completely waterproof, so it's ideal for the kitchen, bath, or laundry room. Add to that affordability, durability, easy maintenance, and an uncomplicated installation. We even see it in high-end homes, where once only authentic hardwood and stone would do.

Get familiar with it, if you're not already

LVF is a material with true-to-life images of wood, stone, and tile, available in a wide assortment of colors and patterns. These images follow all current industry trends, whether you want gray wood floors, marble or other stone floors, or bold tile patterns. Embossing provides depth, dimension, and textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. Edges are beveled, putting them at a slight incline to add more depth.

An exciting design option is that LVF can be cut into planks or tile-sized pieces. Luxury vinyl plank flooring (LVP) means the vinyl is cut into strips and mounted on boards. It is mainly associated with hardwood. LVT flooring is cut into square tile-sized pieces. Many feel the extra seams in LVT add to the realism, and some take it even further by using grout, now available in many colors and considered an important design tool.

What are SPC and WPC cores all about?

The core's job is to maintain waterproof abilities. The typical LVF core is the completely waterproof vinyl composite. If you want an even higher protection level, consider choosing SPC (stone plastic composite) or WPC (wood plastic composite). These cores will not peel or ripple no matter how much or for how long it is exposed to water. While both have the same waterproof capabilities, SPC is more rigid, while WPC has a more flexible feeling, so it comes down to your personal preference.

Other benefits include durability. The vinyl should be at least 8-mm thick, but you might go higher if you want an authentic hardwood feeling. The wear layer, a top clear melamine sheet, is responsible for durability, protecting the floor from scratches and scuffs. That measurement should be at least 20-mils thick. As for maintenance, all it needs is a daily sweeping and periodic mopping.
